Our Mission:

The mission of the Clearwater Basin Youth Conservation Corps (CBYCC) is to expose youth to natural resource career opportunities and facilitate development of practical problem-solving skills while participants work alongside program and technical specialists on projects that restore aquatic and terrestrial habitat and promote healthy rural communities. 

The CBYCC is a partnership effort between the Clearwater Economic Development Association, USDA Forest Service, US Army Corps of Engineers, National Park Service, Idaho Firewise,  Latah County, Latah Soil and Water Conservation District, Nez Perce Tribe, and other local industries, communities, and organizations.

Crew opportunities for the 2024 field season, the CBYCC will employ 6 full crews: 1 in Grangeville, 2 in Kamiah/Kooskia, 1 in Orofino, 1 in Pierce, and 1 in Potlatch. Each crew is comprised of a 5-person team of youth ages 16–18 and 1 adult crew leader.

Each field crew will work on a variety of projects including those that focus on silviculture, wildlife and fisheries, facilities maintenance, recreation, fuels reduction, trail development, weed management, stream restoration, and protection of heritage and other high conservation value sites as well as exposure community volunteerism. The intent is that work projects provide a valuable experience for the crew, but also accomplish a productive task for the sponsoring partner. Participants also have an opportunity to discover the various land management agencies and both for-profit and non-profit organizations operating right in their backyard.

The CBYCC provides all training, personal protective gear, basic tools, and transportation for the crews as well as all supervision and management.

Apply to be a Youth Crew Leader!

Position Summary: Primary and back-up crew leaders for all Clearwater Basin Youth Conservation Corps (CBYCC) crews. The mission of the CBYCC is to expose youth to natural resource career opportunities and facilitate development of practical problem-solving skills while participants work alongside program and technical specialists on projects that restore aquatic and terrestrial habitat and promote healthy rural communities. The CBYCC offers local youth an opportunity to experience the outdoors in a paid work-place setting while also providing a fun learning environment and exposure to traditional skills.

Project Location: Primary or back-up Crew leader positions are available in each of the following crew locations: Grangeville, Kooskia, Orofino, Pierce, and Potlatch.

Compensation and Work Schedule: Primary Crew Lead positions are at least 40 hours per week during the field season with additional paid training and some pre- and post-season organizational work. Back-up Crew Leads will be expected to attend pre-season training (paid) and be available as needed to fill in when the Primary Crew Lead is unavailable (paid hourly when working). The pay rate for this position starts at $20 per hour, depending on experience.

POSITION DESCRIPTION
Apply to be a Wilderness Trail Crew Member!

Trail Crew in the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness. Two available positions.

Hiring for the Wilderness Trail Crew is handled separately from the Youth Crew Members due to the specialized requirements of the position. 

Applicants must be no younger or older than 18.  Crew responsible for own housing and transportation.

In this job you will spend your summer out in the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness working with the Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forests’ Wilderness Trail Crew. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to earn while you learn and be part of a team working to enhance and protect our Wilderness and natural resources. Crews will be based out of the Fenn Ranger Station on the Selway River.

The Clearwater Basin Youth Conservation Corps (CBYCC) is now accepting applications for our 8-week, paid summer work program. As a CBYCC Wilderness Trail Crew member, you will work on a crew with 4-5 others to gain skills and knowledge that will prepare you for a career in natural resources.

  • Why do you want to be a member of the CBYCC Wilderness Trail Crew?
  • What experience do you have that will assist you in being a successful member of the Wilderness Trail Crew?
  • Working on a Wilderness Trail Crew requires being able to go for long periods of time without a lot of human interaction in very remote places. Explain how you feel you will besuited to this type of situation.
  • Safety is imperative to consider in the backcountry. What will you do to ensure the safety of yourself and others while working and living with the Wilderness Trail Crew?
